But here are the tell-tale signs: fungus usually shows up as circular brown or tan patches that spread; grub damage makes turf spongy and loose, like carpet that's come unglued (often with skunks, armadillos, or moles digging for them); and armyworms strip large brown areas seemingly overnight — the soap test (2 tablespoons of dish soap in a gallon of water poured on a square foot) will bring them to the surface.
